X is changing how creators earn money on the platform, discontinuing its existing creator revenue-sharing scheme and introducing a new one focused on original work.
The Elon Musk-owned platform stopped accepting new applications for the current programme on August 7. Creators who remain eligible will receive their final payments in September, covering qualifying earnings up to September 7.
X said the decision followed concerns that the old system could encourage users to recycle popular material rather than develop their own content.
The platform’s new Original Content Rewards programme will instead calculate creators’ earnings based on qualified impressions generated by their original posts. Payments will be made every two weeks, subject to creators and their content continuing to satisfy X’s requirements.
The company said eligible creations could range from videos, threads, photographs and memes to original reporting, commentary, analysis, graphics and illustrations. Content that substantially reworks existing material through creative editing, humour, narration or analysis may also qualify.
Allegra Jacchia, X’s head of creators, said the new approach was intended to better recognise users who bring creativity, expertise and original ideas to conversations on the platform.
At launch, however, the new programme will only be available to creators already enrolled in the outgoing revenue-sharing scheme.
