The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has dismissed reports suggesting that he is lobbying to become the Director-General of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council.
Wike also reaffirmed his support for the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, saying he does not need to occupy any position in the President’s campaign council to contribute to his electoral success.
Reports had listed Wike among prominent APC chieftains and government officials allegedly lobbying for or being considered for the position of Director-General of the party’s Presidential Campaign Council.
However, in a statement issued on Monday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, the FCT Minister described the reports as false.
Wike said he had never discussed the leadership or membership of the Presidential Campaign Council with anyone.
The minister explained that he was currently outside Nigeria, taking a break after spending more than 30 days commissioning projects, flagging off new ones and inspecting ongoing projects in the Federal Capital Territory.
He said some of the projects being inspected are scheduled for commissioning in December and January next year.
According to Wike, upon his return, his focus will remain on delivering on the mandate of the FCT Administration in line with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
He also said he would continue working to improve the President’s electoral prospects in Rivers State and the FCT.
Wike stressed that he does not need to be appointed Director-General or even become a member of the Presidential Campaign Council to support President Tinubu’s re-election bid.
The minister maintained that his commitment is to ensure the President secures decisive victories in both Rivers State and the Federal Capital Territory.
