The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared a total and indefinite strike in two Ondo State universities over the failure of the state government to implement the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement.
The affected institutions are Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), and Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (OAUSTECH), Okitipupa.
The chairman of ASUU-AAUA, Prof. Boluwaji Oshodi, said the decision followed the failure of the state government to take concrete steps towards implementing the agreement despite several engagements with the union.
The development came barely a week after the AAUA chapter suspended an earlier strike over unpaid salary backlogs following the payment of the outstanding salaries.
Oshodi said the union had written several letters and requested meetings with the government, but said members had become unwilling to accept further promises without concrete action.
“The union has just declared an indefinite, total, and comprehensive strike over the non-implementation of the federal government of Nigeria (FGN)/ASUU 2025 agreement,” he said.
He added that the union would not resume work unless the agreement was implemented and the arrears owed from January were paid.
“We are not ready to listen to anything like commitment again. What we want now is action,” Oshodi said.
The ASUU chairman questioned why Ondo State had yet to implement the agreement when several other states had commenced implementation, saying, “Why will our own be different in Ondo State, an oil-producing state?”
He, however, said the union remained open to dialogue but maintained that implementation and payment of the outstanding arrears must precede resumption.
Similarly, ASUU-OAUSTECH has commenced an indefinite strike over the non-implementation of the 2025 agreement.
The branch chairman, Comrade Ogunbamike, directed members to suspend final-year defences, postgraduate teaching and examinations, examination marking, school board and departmental meetings and all other academic activities until further notice.
