Six Injured As Gunshots Rock NDC Campaign In Delta

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC)  Delta Central Senatorial Candidate, Ovie Omo-Agege, has alleged that he was the target of a gunshot attack at the party’s campaign, which left six persons injured

According to him, armed men attacked members of his campaign team during a ward-to-ward consultation in Usiefrun, Delta State, saying that the attackers targeted him and other NDC leaders during the incident, which he said occurred on Thursday.

In a statement issued yesterday, the former Deputy Senate President claimed that the attackers attempted to kill him but failed.

He said six NDC members sustained injuries in the shooting, identifying four of the victims as Believe Biadoyo, Joshua Oghenetega Oyibocha, Owhos Peter and Ojiyovwin Dennis.

Omo-Agege further alleged that eyewitness accounts and video footage had identified four individuals in connection with the incident.

He said the individuals are; Hon Simon Mudi, popularly known as “TEMPLE”, the Governor’s Protocol Officer, Flash Oghenetega Origbon, Ochuko Origbon and Alex Awherhurho, adding that the alleged individuals are members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State.

The NDC candidate linked the alleged attack to two previous incidents reported on July 29 involving Mudi at PTI, Effurun, and Iyovwaye in Agholokpe.

Describing the incidents as part of what he called a “planned campaign of violence” ahead of the 2027 elections, Omo-Agege called on the police and other security agencies to arrest and prosecute those allegedly responsible.

He also urged the Delta State Government to suspend any government appointee found to have been involved in the incident.

Omo-Agege called for the Agholokpe, Effurun and Usiefrun incidents to be investigated together, while urging the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), civil society organisations and the international community to deploy observers to Delta Central ahead of the 2027 elections.

He gave Governor Sheriff Oborevwori 48 hours to publicly condemn the alleged attack and ensure the arrest of those responsible, warning that failure to act could be interpreted as complicity.

Despite the incident, Omo-Agege said the NDC would not suspend its ward-to-ward campaign activities, urging supporters to remain calm and refrain from retaliation.

He maintained that the party would remain focused on its political agenda for Delta State and would not allow alleged acts of violence to derail its campaign.

But the Senior Special Assistant to the Delta State Governor on Protocol, Mr Simon Mudi, popularly known as Temple, denounced the allegation, describing the claim as malicious and baseless.

Speaking with journalists via telephone on Friday, Temple rejected in the strongest terms the claim that he attacked certain persons at Usiefrun on August 13, 2026.

He challenged the senator to immediately produce the video evidence he allegedly referenced on his Facebook page, insisting that no such incident occurred.

Temple explained that he is presently receiving medical treatment in Asaba and could not possibly have been present at Usiefrun.

He questioned how Omo-Agege and his associates could claim to have sighted him at the location when he was confined to the state capital for health reasons.

He further clarified his identity and origins, stating that he is an indigene of Ekakpamre community and has no residential or ancestral connection to Usiefrun, contrary to the senator’s assertion.

In a scathing assessment of the senator’s motives, Temple accused Omo-Agege of premature political desperation.

He said the senator was already “wailing ahead of his looming failure” in the 2027 general elections, describing the outburst as both premature and revealing of deep insecurity.

Meanwhile, the National President of GOMEP-NG, Comrade Akpovoke Otiti, described the incident as disturbing and unacceptable, warning that political disagreements must not be allowed to escalate into violence ahead of the 2026 elections.

Otiti, in a statement on Friday, urged the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to order a thorough and impartial investigation to establish what transpired and identify those responsible.

He said the need for urgent intervention had become more pressing as political activities intensify ahead of the elections.
