Vote Based On Performance, Not Religion — Daurawa

Prominent Islamic scholar, Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa, has urged Nigerians to vote based on the performance and competence of political candidates rather than their religious identity in the 2027 general elections.

Daurawa made the call during an interview with DW Hausa.

The scholar said the focus of voters should be on candidates’ ability to deliver good governance and their track records in public service.

“It shouldn’t be about religion but who is going to work, what is the person capable of doing, and what has he done?” he said.

Daurawa argued that Nigeria’s democratic system is not based on religion, noting that the Constitution does not recognise political parties as either Islamic or Christian organisations.

“Is there any party registered by INEC as an Islamic party or a Christian party or has any religious manifesto?” he asked.

He said Nigerians should be free to vote for candidates regardless of whether their tickets are Muslim-Muslim, Christian-Christian, Muslim-Christian or Christian-Muslim.

Daurawa also urged Nigerians to avoid insulting or attacking others because of the religious composition of political tickets, stressing that candidates should be judged by their records and what they intend to achieve.

“Nigerians should judge candidates by what they will do and what they have done, not by religion,” he said.

The cleric further called on Nigerians to shun violence, character assasination and foul language and participate peacefully in the electoral process.
