Geregu Power Reconnects To National Grid, Targets Full Recovery

Geregu Power Plc has reconnected to the national electricity grid after more than six months of shutdown, following the completion of rehabilitation work on one of its failed generator transformers.

The acting managing director of the company, Engr. Muhammed Sani Jaoji, disclosed this to journalists at Ajaokuta, Kogi State, saying the plant was successfully synchronised with the national grid at about 8:48am on Tuesday, August 18, 2026.

Jaoji said the development marked the beginning of a robust recovery programme by the new owners, MA’AM Energy Limited, aimed at restoring the plant to its former position of contributing about 10 per cent of Nigeria’s electricity generation.

He disclosed that rehabilitation of the second thermal power transformer was nearing completion and would be synchronised with the national grid in September, while the third unit is expected to follow in October.

“Our efforts to inject life into the Geregu Power Plc facilities are largely intended to return the power plant to full production and generation, as well as restore shareholders’ confidence and enable the company participate actively in the energy market,” he said.

The head of maintenance, Engr. Bernard Siaka, said GT11 had been out of production since May 27, 2023, leaving GT12 and GT13 operational until December 29, 2025, when system turbulence and a grid collapse resulted in transformer failure.

He attributed the failure partly to challenges arising from the previous major system overhaul, which, he said, was carried out by a company other than Siemens, the original builder and OEM of the plant.

Siaka said workers had regained confidence under the leadership of Jaoji, describing the development as a new beginning for the plant.

Also, the Acting Chief Technical Officer, Engr. Ali Muhammed Mambo, said the workforce was excited by Jaoji’s appointment, expressing optimism that the renewed team spirit would strengthen the plant’s stability.

Jaoji commended the engineering team for the successful rehabilitation, saying the feat demonstrated the competence and capacity of Nigerian engineers to overcome complex industry challenges.

He assured shareholders that management was committed to establishing a reliable and efficient production regime that would minimise operational challenges and improve the value and performance of the company.

Geregu Power Plc was listed as a public company in October 2022 with a financial stock base of N250 billion. The company subsequently witnessed a reduction in the major shareholder’s stake before its acquisition by MA’AM Energy Limited in 2025, amid concerns by investors over declining share value and bond payment obligations.
