7 Killed As Wrong-Way Car Crashes Into Police Vehicle In England

Seven people, including two police officers, have been killed in a road crash in northeast England after a car travelling against the flow of traffic collided with a marked police vehicle.

Cleveland Police said all seven occupants of the two vehicles died at the scene.

The five people in the other vehicle, a Volkswagen Passat, have been formally identified, with police contacting their families.

The two officers killed were identified as Police Constables Matthew Blades, 37, and Tom Clough, 38.

The force described them as “brave officers … who didn’t return home to their families at the end of their shift.”

Prime Minister Andy Burnham expressed sadness over the incident, which will be reviewed by the Independent Office for Police Conduct.

The crash comes amid growing concerns over wrong-way driving in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Following two recent head-on crashes near Dublin, one of which claimed five lives, Ireland’s police chief warned this week that some young people were deliberately driving against traffic on motorways for social media attention.

An Irish parliamentary committee has since asked TikTok to explain how it removes content “that appears to glorify dangerous and illegal behaviour on our roads”.

Ireland’s media regulator made a similar request on Tuesday.
