8 Months After Wedding, Wife Stabs Husband To Death

Thirty-three Saturdays ago, the Nwaorji family compound in Umunwaoji, Abia State, was alive with songs, prayers and celebration as Innocent Nwaorji, 38, married Serah. Today, the same compound is shrouded in mourning after Innocent was allegedly stabbed by his wife barely months into their marriage. In this report, KALU EZIYI writes that both families are left grappling with one haunting question: what happened within the young marriage that turned a promise of a lifetime into a fatal ending?

The marriage of Innocent Nwaorji and Serah Nkole appeared to mark an ordinary start to a life together. They were married on Saturday, December 20, 2025, amid the joy, prayers and celebrations that traditionally accompany a new union.

For neighbours in Umunwaoji, the couple were simply the newest husband and wife in the community. There was little, if anything, to suggest that their union would end in tragedy barely months after it began.

But on Saturday, 8 August 2026, eight months after the marriage, reports of what happened began circulating rapidly through the community.

The police, however, have given a somewhat different account of the incident.

In a statement issued on Monday, 10 August, the Abia State Police public relations officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, said the incident occurred during a misunderstanding between the couple and that the suspect allegedly stabbed her husband in the chest with a kitchen knife.

According to the police statement, Innocent was rushed to a hospital, where a doctor confirmed he was dead.

The police said the scene of the incident had been visited, and the deceased’s body had been taken to a morgue for autopsy. Serah Nwaorji, a staff member of the Welfare Department of the Aba South local government area, was subsequently taken into custody and is being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Umuahia, where the investigation is ongoing.

Chief (Elder) Newman Amalahu, the traditional chief of Uhuru/Isimiri and landlord of Innocent, said he was the first to arrive at the scene after hearing Serah call for help.

According to him, at about 10:05 pm, he rushed into the couple’s apartment and found Innocent lying on the parlour floor, bleeding profusely.

“At exactly 10.05 pm, I heard Serah’s voice calling for help. I rushed into their apartment and saw Innocent lying down on the floor in the parlour bleeding profusely,” he said.

Amalahu said that when he made inquiries, Serah allegedly admitted that she had stabbed her husband but could not explain why she did it.

“She appeared to be completely confused and was running around him, pleading for assistance to take him to the hospital for medical attention,” he said.

He added that he immediately reported the matter to the police, who arrived and took charge of the situation while efforts were made to obtain medical attention for Innocent.

It was also reliably reported that four hospitals allegedly refused to admit Innocent because of the severity of the injury, before he was eventually taken to the State Teaching Hospital, Aba, where he was pronounced dead that night.

At the Nwaorji family compound, however, the official account has done little to ease the pain of a family struggling to understand how a son, brother and husband could have been suddenly lost in such circumstances.

When LEADERSHIP Weekend visited the bereaved compound, the deceased’s aged mother, siblings, their wives and children gathered in clusters, united by grief and disbelief as they tried to come to terms with the loss.

Speaking in an emotional yet controlled voice, the deceased’s elder brother, Mr Uchechukwu Nwaorji, told our correspondent that the family had never known of any serious feud between Innocent and his wife.

“We never heard of any feud between them,” he said. “As humans, they were not immune to disagreements, but it ought not to have led to physical confrontation or such a sorry end.”

Uchechukwu said the circumstances were particularly difficult for the family to understand because the marriage was still relatively new.

“Considering they married barely eight months ago, it will not be out of place for me or the family to assume they were still enjoying their honeymoon, not quarrelling,” he said.

For the family, the tragedy is made even more painful by memories of the man Innocent was.

Uchechukwu described his late brother as the embodiment of his name — simple, gentle, honest and peace-loving.

“He was simple, gentle, honest, and could not hurt a fly,” he said.

Innocent was 38. According to his brother, he was a graduate of Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba, and was known throughout his life for preferring dialogue and peaceful resolution, even when he was hurt.

He was also a staff member at the Abia State Ministry of Justice, serving in Obegu, Ugwunagbo Local Government Area. He lived in Aba with his wife until the day their marriage ended in tragedy.

But while Innocent’s family struggled to come to terms with his death, Serah’s family was confronting another reality: the loss of a daughter in police custody over her husband’s death.

Serah’s brother, Mr Isaiah Nkole, told LEADERSHIP Weekend that the tragedy was difficult to reconcile with the couple’s recent start to building their life together.

According to him, as newlyweds, Innocent and Serah were expected to be planning their future rather than becoming the subjects of a tragedy that would tear both families apart.

Yet, reflecting on the incident and the cordial relationship the couple appeared to have maintained, Isaiah said he had begun to wonder whether there was more to what happened than was immediately apparent.

“This could be the work of an unseen hand, an external influence, or manipulation,” Isaiah said. “Or what could have prompted her to pick up a knife and stab her husband?”

That claim, however, remains Serah’s brother’s view and has not been substantiated by the police investigation.

Isaiah also said the family had not yet informed their mother of the incident because of her age and fragile condition.

Asked whether their mother was aware of what had happened to her daughter, he said the family had decided to shield her from the news.

“We’re yet to inform our mother, a fragile and ageing widow, about the incident because doing so would be tantamount to signing her death warrant, to say the least,” he explained.

“At 85 years, she can’t bear to hear such a story about her daughter.”

Isaiah said that since learning of the incident, he had struggled to come to terms with the tragedy.

The tragedy has also left the church where the couple solemnised their marriage, mourning and searching for answers.

The Rev. Canon Emmanuel Emelike, who officiated at the solemnisation of the union, expressed deep sorrow over the incident. He said that Innocent was not only a strong member of the church but also served as the parish organist.

Emelike said he was not aware of any serious misunderstanding between the couple.

“As their minister, I would have intervened to make peace between them without delay. But none was brought to my attention,” he said.

Speaking also, one of the parish leaders, Brother John Ogbuagu, who witnessed the wedding and attended the reception, said he never anticipated the marriage would end in tragedy.

He maintained that if there had been any disagreement or misunderstanding between the couple, they had never made it public.

The tragedy has also left the wider community searching for answers.

LEADERSHIP Weekend observed that Umunwaoji, described by residents as a quiet community, has been gripped by shock since the incident. The death of a man who had only recently begun married life has become a painful topic of conversation among residents.

For many who knew the couple, the question is not simply how Innocent died, but what could have happened between two people who had only recently exchanged marriage vows to lead them to such a violent moment.

As many people continue to ask the same questions, what exactly happened between Innocent and Serah on the day of the incident?

Was there a long-simmering disagreement that those around them were unaware of? Was it a sudden confrontation? Or are there other circumstances yet to emerge?

For now, the answers remain elusive. The police investigation is expected to shed more light on the circumstances surrounding Innocent’s death. At the same time, the autopsy may provide further information on the precise cause and nature of the injuries he sustained.

For the two families, however, the investigation cannot undo the loss.

This is because, while one family is mourning a son, brother and husband, the other is facing the painful reality of a daughter being held in police custody over her husband’s death.

And in Umunwaoji, a marriage that began with hope and celebration has left behind grief, unanswered questions, and two families trying to understand how a union meant to last a lifetime ended so tragically.
