Babangida Varsity’s ASUU Begins Indefinite Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida University, Lapai (IBBUL) branch has declared an indefinite strike

At a news conference declaring the strike, the chairman of the ASUU, Dr Galadima Bala, said the decision was taken at an emergency congress of the union on Monday.

He said the decision was sequel to the continued non-implementation of all critical components of the 2025 federal government and ASUU agreement by the Niger State government.

He said, ” Despite our patience, several engagements and appeals, these issues remain unresolved. The union has exhausted several avenues of dialogue and engagement with the relevant authorities and key stakeholders without satisfactory implementation of the agreement and resolutions of issues at stake”.

“It may interest the public to note that the agreement in question was reached with the participation of all the major stakeholders of all state governments and public universities across the country. Therefore, an agreement entered must be honoured and implemented in totality. In the past, the Niger State government has always shown commitment as the first to implement national agreements,” he added.

He said about 16 state universities have implemented this agreement but Niger State is left behind, saying that the neglect of education was a recipe for more security risks that the state could not afford.

Galadima said the industrial action could be brought to an end as soon as there was demonstrable commitment and concrete actions in the implementation of the agreement.

“We therefore urge the Niger State Government to act decisively and responsibly by matching words with action in resolving these issues without further delay,” he added.

Meanwhile the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Hon Adamu Abdullahi Sheshi has appealed to the striking lecturers to resume work saying that the government was doing everything possible to meet their demands.
