AI Boom: Google Tightens Android App Memory Rules

The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) data centres is beginning to put pressure on the memory resources available to smartphones, prompting Google to introduce tighter requirements aimed at reducing how much memory Android applications consume.

The move comes as the global technology industry grapples with memory chip supply constraints linked to surging demand from AI data centres, a development that could have implications for lower-cost smartphones where limited memory is already a performance concern.

Google has introduced two new Android app quality requirements, including measures requiring developers to reduce memory usage and optimise application code.

The company said the mobile industry is facing significant hardware supply constraints that are changing the availability of device memory and could ultimately affect users’ experience.

Under the new requirements, Google is establishing performance thresholds covering areas including dynamic memory and bitmap usage, while requiring developers to optimise their code to reduce problems such as application slowdowns and crashes.

The technology giant is also introducing tools that will alert developers when their applications exceed the new thresholds, enabling them to identify and address excessive memory consumption.

Google plans to introduce additional diagnostic tools later in the year, including a Memory Limiter feature designed to provide developers with deeper insights into memory usage and prevent applications from consuming excessive device memory.

The changes are particularly significant for low-end Android devices, where manufacturers typically operate within tighter hardware and pricing constraints.

According to Google, the measures are intended to help Android application and game developers maintain performance as memory becomes less readily available.

Developers have until February 2027 to comply with the new memory performance thresholds.

The development comes against the backdrop of an expanding memory chip crunch driven by the AI infrastructure boom. Demand from data-centre operators for advanced memory used in AI computing has increased pressure across the broader memory market, affecting supplies available for consumer electronics.

The impact for smartphone users, could extend beyond applications as manufacturers face pressure to secure memory components at a time when AI infrastructure companies are competing for supply.

Google is also introducing another requirement for Play Store applications, with developers expected to support its Zero Tap Sign-In requirement during device migration by April 2027. The feature is designed to automatically restore users’ sign-in state when they move to another Android device.

Also, the latest measures highlight how the AI boom is increasingly affecting parts of the consumer technology ecosystem beyond data centres, with pressure on memory supply now influencing software design and smartphone performance.

However, for Android users using lower-cost devices, more efficient applications could help reduce slowdowns and crashes as manufacturers and developers adjust to tighter memory availability.
