Ondo Medical Varsity Shut As ASUU Begins Strike

Academic activities have been grounded at the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED) in Ondo State following the declaration of an indefinite strike by the institution’s chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The union, under the aegis of ASUU-UNIMEDO, declared the strike over the failure of the state government to fully implement the 2025 federal government-ASUU agreement and pay accrued arrears dating back to January 1, 2026.

The decision was taken at the union’s congress following the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the university management and the state government to implement the agreement.

The union in a statement signed by the chairman of ASUU-UNIMEDO, Comrade Abraham Oladebeye, and secretary, Comrade Adeniran Akinola, said the ultimatum expired on August 25 without full implementation of the agreement.

The union consequently directed all members to withdraw from their statutory academic duties with immediate effect, saying the strike would continue indefinitely until its demands were met, subject to further directives from the National Executive Council (NEC).

‎‎“Congress resolved that all members should withdraw from their statutory academic duties with immediate effect and that the strike shall be total, comprehensive and indefinite until the agreement is fully implemented and all accrued arrears from January 1, 2026 are paid,” the union stated.

‎‎Under the directive, lecturers are to suspend lectures, classes, continuous assessments and examinations across the university.
