Lagos Govt Warns Residents On Environmental Sanity

As part of efforts to tackle indiscriminate dumping of wastes, the Lagos State government yesterday warned the residents against patronising cart pushers, saying anyone caught would face the law.

The deputy governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, who gave the warning during the monthly environmental sanitation exercise in FESTAC Town, Amuwo-Odofin local government area, urged the residents to patronise accredited private sector operators instead of cart pushers.

According to the deputy governor, investigations have shown that waste collected by some cart pushers were often dumped in drainage channels and road medians, thereby contributing to environmental problems and flooding.

He disclosed that the state had concluded plans to deploy additional 220 compactor trucks to boost its waste management capacity amid environmental challenges.

Hamzat along with the commissioner for  environment and water resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab and other top state government officials noted that the trucks would complement the existing PSP waste collection system which had been facing various challenges in recent times.

The deputy governor said the trucks would help the government respond to the growing volume of waste generated across the state as a result of population growth.

He said, “The state government will be bringing in another 220 trucks to make sure that we supplement our PSP.

“What we need our people to also do is to make sure that they patronise their PSP, not the cart pushers, because they are not organised. You don’t know where the waste is ending up.”
