The Movement for National Reformation (MNR) has congratulated veteran pro-democracy campaigner and former national secretary of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), Chief Ayo Opadokun, on his 80th birthday.
In a statement yesterday in Abuja, signed by its general secretary, Dr Philip Idaewor, the group described Opadokun as a distinguished patriot whose life had been defined by courage, sacrifice and an unwavering commitment to freedom, justice and democratic governance in Nigeria.
Idaewor said Opadokun’s contributions to the pro-democracy struggle, particularly his role as a leading figure in NADECO, remained an enduring part of Nigeria’s democratic history.
According to him, Opadokun stood firm during some of the most difficult periods in the country’s struggle for political freedom and democratic governance, noting that his personal sacrifices and advocacy helped sustain the campaign for the restoration of democratic rule.
He said, “The MNR recognises Chief Opadokun not only as a pro-democracy activist but also as a moral voice whose dedication to principled leadership and national renewal has remained consistent over the decades.”
He further commended Opadokun for his longstanding advocacy for an equitably restructured Nigeria, saying his commitment continued to inspire citizens seeking a country where justice, fairness and equality would prevail for all.
“As he celebrates eighty years of purposeful living, we salute his resilience, wisdom, and exemplary service to the Nigerian nation,” he said.
The organisation prayed for continued good health, strength and many more years for the elder statesman to share his experience and provide guidance in the quest for a just, united and prosperous Nigeria.
“It also extended its congratulations to Opadokun’s family, associates and others who had participated in the pro-democracy struggle alongside him.
“Happy 80th Birthday, Chief Ayo Opadokun. Your legacy of sacrifice, courage and service remains a beacon of hope for our nation,” the MNR said
