Democracy At Risk Without United Opposition Front – Adebayo

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) Presidential Candidate, Adewole Adebayo, has said that Nigeria’s democracy may collapse if opposition parties fail to unite ahead of the 2027 election.

Speaking during an appearance on ARISE Television’s Morning Show, Adebayo said the central threat is not policy differences, but democratic backsliding.

Recall that a G100 meeting was convened in Abuja. Six parties were represented, which include SDP, ADC, NDC, PRP, APM and a faction of PDP.

The meeting aimed to build a framework for cooperation to produce a single presidential candidate for the 2027 election.

Adebayo said flawed elections, weakened institutions, and voter apathy could end credible contests if opposition forces remain divided and uncoordinated.

He noted that no one is stepping down yet because all aspirants are active.

“The plan is for aspirants to step aside later to allow a consensus process,” he said.

Adebayo also said the priority for the parties’ alliance is ending poverty and insecurity that have bedeviled the country for long, and described disagreements on issues of fuel subsidy as secondary and manageable.

“The coalition must work together to ensure INEC remains independent and security agencies respect the law during the elections in 2027,” he stated.

Adebayo confirmed the SDP is backing him as its lead candidate. However, he pledged that the party would remain in the alliance even if another person emerges, because the mission is bigger than individual ambition.

He urged political leaders to prioritize country over ego.

“There is no prize for second in politics,” he said.

Adebayo expressed hope that further dialogue will produce a credible alternative for Nigerians in 2027.
