BREAKING: Police Confirm Attack On Peter Obi’s Convoy In Benue

The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the attack on the convoy of the Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, along the Gboko-Makurdi Expressway in Makurdi on Tuesday.

The Command, however, said the reason the convoy was blocked by some youths remained unknown, adding that investigations had commenced to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Peter Orchia Aondongu, who confirmed the incident, said police operatives provided security for Obi’s movement to Yelwata in Guma Local Government Area of the state.

According to Aondongu, “We can confirm that the Police are aware of the incident involving Peter Obi’s movement to Yelwata. Police operatives provided security for the movement.

“The reason the convoy was blocked by some youths is still unknown. We are monitoring the situation and investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. Further updates will be provided accordingly.”

LEADERSHIP had earlier reported that a large number of youths allegedly attacked Obi’s convoy along the Gboko-Makurdi Expressway, preventing him from proceeding to Yelwata to condole with victims of the June 13, 2025 terrorist attack.

Obi had arrived in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, on Tuesday morning and was on his way to Yelwata when the incident occurred.

The NDC presidential candidate was scheduled to visit victims of the attack and express solidarity with affected families and communities.

The Benue State NDC Publicity Secretary, Agile Bem Ordedoo, accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of mobilising the youths to stop Obi from entering Yelwata.

Ordedoo said, “Thugs in their numbers mobilised in thousands and stopped the Presidential candidate of NDC, Mr Peter Obi, from entering Yelwata to condole with victims and offer relief materials worth billions.”

He said Obi had planned to visit the victims and present relief materials as part of efforts to support residents affected by the attack.

However, the APC rejected the allegation, saying it had no knowledge of the incident and would not be involved in thuggery.

The Benue State APC Publicity Secretary, Benedict Yaweh, in a telephone interview, said, “We are not aware of the attack if truly they were attacked in Makurdi. If they were attacked, it may be from their aggrieved supporters and not APC members. We are a peace-loving party and we don’t involve in thuggery.”

The conflicting claims came as the Police confirmed that some youths blocked Obi’s convoy but said the reason for the action had yet to be established.

The Police Command also did not identify the youths involved or attribute the incident to any political party or individual.

The June 13, 2025 attack on Yelwata claimed scores of lives and displaced residents, drawing widespread condemnation and renewed calls for improved security in Benue State.

Obi’s planned visit was aimed at commiserating with the affected communities, but the reported incident prevented him from reaching Yelwata as scheduled.

The police said investigation into the circumstances surrounding the blockade was ongoing and promised to provide further updates.
