– Elder statesman, astute businessman and politician, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur (CON), was born on 15 September 1935 in what is now Adamawa State.

– He came to national attention in the mid-1970s as the General Manager of the Nigerian Ports Authority.

– He later became Governor of the old Gongola State, which encompassed present-day Adamawa and Taraba States (October 1983 – December 1983).

– In 1992, he was an unsuccessful presidential candidate on the platform of the defunct National Republican Convention.

– He served as Minister of Industries in the administration of General Sani Abacha during the 1990s.

– He was Executive President of the African Business Roundtable and Chairman of the NEPAD Business Group.

– He was National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from March 2012 to January 2014.

– He was Honorary Life President of the West and Central Africa Ports Management Association, and a member of various Chambers of Commerce in Nigeria.

– He was a member of the UNIDO International Business Advisory Council, the Ghana Investors Advisory Council and the OECD Africa Investment Advisory Board.

– He was elected Chairman of the NEPAD Business Group in March 2002.

– Tukur served as Chairman of the Advisory Board at Africa Investor Ltd. and also served as Chairman of the Board at African Investment Advisory.

– He died on 12 September 2026, aged 90.
