Ember Months: Lagos Intensifies Campaign Against Carnage, Warns Motorists Against Reckless Driving

The Lagos State Safety Commission has warned motorists and other road users against reckless driving during and after the ember months to curb carnage on the nation’s roads.

The agency stated this when it took its 2026 Road Safety Week sensitisation campaign to Ikorodu Garage and its environs, calling on motorists, commercial drivers, commuters and other road users to exercise greater caution, patience and discipline, particularly during the ember months.

Speaking on the significance of the exercise, the Director-General of the Lagos State Safety Commission, Mr Lanre Mojola, represented by the Commission’s Technical Adviser, Mr Seun Awojobi, said the campaign, which featured a road walk through the busy transport hub and surrounding areas was designed to raise public awareness about road safety, discourage reckless driving and promote responsible conduct among road users to reduce accidents and protect lives and property across Lagos State.

According to him, the initiative formed part of activities lined up to commemorate the 2026 Lagos Road Safety Week.

Mojola explained that the campaign was intended to take road safety messages directly to residents and commuters, stressing that public sensitisation remained essential to preventing avoidable road crashes and ensuring safer mobility across the state.

He noted that the importance attached to road safety by the Lagos State government informed the Commission’s decision to extend its awareness drive to different parts of the state, particularly busy transport interchanges where large numbers of motorists, commercial transport operators and commuters converge daily.

According to him, the campaign seeks to encourage road users to demonstrate patience, exercise restraint and observe safety precautions in their daily activities, especially during periods when increased travel and traffic pressure may heighten the risk of road accidents.

He urged residents to remain vigilant throughout the remaining ember months, emphasising that responsible behaviour on the roads was a shared responsibility that required the cooperation of motorists, passengers, pedestrians and transport operators.

The director-general stressed that road safety should not be treated as a seasonal concern but as a continuous commitment to protecting human lives and preventing incidents that could have devastating consequences for families and communities.

Also speaking at the event, the Head of Operations, Mrs Fekoya Emma who represented the Lagos State Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) called for heightened vigilance during the ember months, noting that the period had acquired various descriptions because of concerns associated with increased travel and road crashes.

She maintained that many of the risks could be reduced through deliberate caution, strict compliance with traffic regulations and a conscious effort by road users to avoid behaviours that endanger lives.

Fekoya explained that the decision to commence the sensitisation exercise at Ikorodu Garage was part of a broader strategy to reach people at major transport hubs, where road safety messages could have a direct impact on motorists, commercial drivers and commuters.

She disclosed that the campaign would be extended to other strategic locations, including Oshodi, and Lagos Island, as part of efforts to widen public participation and strengthen awareness of safe road practices across the state.
