The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) branch, Ogbomoso, has declared an indefinite strike over unresolved agreements, unpaid staff entitlements and other outstanding issues involving the university management and the Federal Government.
Politics Nigeria gathered that the strike, which takes effect from 12:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 29, 2026, follows the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued by the union to the university management.
The decision marks an escalation of the dispute, with academic activities expected to be affected by the industrial action.
ASUU announced the decision in a statement dated October 29 and signed by the branch chairperson, Professor Olujimi Dada, and the secretary, Dr Soji Arinola.
According to the statement, the resolution was reached during an emergency congress held on Wednesday, October 28, after the union considered the outstanding issues that prompted its ultimatum.
The union described the industrial action as “total, comprehensive and indefinite,” indicating that its members would withdraw their services until the issues leading to the strike are addressed.
The development comes amid growing concerns over unresolved labour disputes in Nigeria’s university system, where disagreements over funding, staff welfare, salary-related matters and the implementation of agreements have repeatedly threatened the smooth running of academic activities.
Among the major grievances cited by the LAUTECH branch is the non-implementation of the 2025 agreement between the Federal Government and ASUU.
The union has also raised concerns over outstanding staff entitlements, which it says remain unresolved despite the period given to the authorities to address its demands.
The 14-day ultimatum was intended to give the relevant authorities time to resolve the dispute and prevent a shutdown of academic activities.
However, the union’s decision to proceed with the strike suggests that the measures taken during the period were insufficient to secure an agreement acceptable to its members.
By declaring the action indefinite, ASUU has not announced a fixed date for its suspension in the statement provided.
The duration of the strike will therefore depend on developments in negotiations and the resolution of the outstanding demands.
The industrial action is likely to raise concerns among students, parents and other members of the university community, particularly those who could face interruptions to lectures, examinations, research activities and other academic programmes.
The extent of the disruption will depend on how the university implements the strike and whether further discussions lead to an early resolution.
Staff welfare remains central to the dispute. Outstanding entitlements can affect workers’ financial stability and confidence in the institutions responsible for their employment.
The union’s decision to embark on a total strike places renewed pressure on the relevant authorities to clarify the status of the unpaid obligations and explain the steps being taken to fulfil them.
The disagreement over the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement also adds to the dispute.
Agreements reached between university lecturers and government authorities are intended to establish commitments on matters affecting academic staff and the university system.
When implementation remains disputed, the consequences can extend beyond the negotiating parties to students and the wider education sector.
Although the LAUTECH branch has announced the commencement of the strike, details of any fresh negotiations, a response from the university management or a specific timetable for resolving the dispute were not included in the statement provided by the union.
It also remains unclear whether the management will announce measures to address the concerns raised by the lecturers following the commencement of the action.
