Alumni Move To Revive 50-year-Old School

Former students of Omoluorogbo Grammar School, Akure (OGSA) have begun plans to revive the 50-year-old institution through a legacy project to improve its infrastructure and strengthen its academic environment.

The initiative is part of the activities lined up for the school’s Golden Jubilee celebration, scheduled for 29th October to October 31st, which will bring together old students, serving and former teachers, parents, and other stakeholders from Nigeria and the diaspora.

The chairman of the 50th Anniversary Implementation Committee, Hon. Kayode Akinmade, said the event provided an opportunity to look beyond celebration and address some of the challenges confronting the school.

Akinmade said the school had continued to produce graduates who had distinguished themselves in various professions despite infrastructural challenges and limited investment in its physical structures over the years.

“Fifty years is a remarkable milestone. It is a time to celebrate where we are coming from, honour those who laid the foundation and, most importantly, recommit ourselves to building an even greater future for the generations coming behind us,” he said.

He disclosed that many of the structures currently serving the school dated back to its formative years following its emergence from the former Messiah Modern School in 1976.

According to him, the Golden Jubilee would provide an opportunity for alumni and other stakeholders to identify practical ways to strengthen the school’s infrastructure, academic environment, and overall capacity.‎

‎The three-day programme will open on 29 October with an Interdenominational Thanksgiving Service, followed by activities highlighting the history and personalities associated with the institution over the past five decades.

‎The second day will feature an alumni reunion, career development and mentorship sessions, as well as sporting activities to reconnect former students and expose current students to the experiences of accomplished alumni.

‎The celebration will climax on 31 October with a grand finale and the official presentation and launch of the OGSA Legacy Project, which is expected to channel alumni support towards the continued development of the school.

‎Akinmade said the initiative was intended to ensure that the anniversary produced tangible benefits for present and future students rather than ending as a ceremonial gathering.

‎“OGSA at 50 is not simply about looking back at five decades. It is about asking what we can collectively do to ensure that the next 50 years are even more impactful,” the committee chairman said.
