US President Donald Trump has pushed back against growing demands for stronger government oversight of artificial intelligence, arguing that tighter controls could undermine America’s position in the global technology race.
Trump used several posts on Truth Social on Monday to dismiss warnings about increasingly powerful AI systems, describing fears that the technology could eventually threaten humanity as a “HOAX”.
He also accused opponents of AI expansion and data centres of being part of a “SICK conspiracy” and compared the concerns to what he called previous false alarms over climate change.
Trump argued that the United States already has sufficient regulatory and criminal powers to deal with AI companies and maintained that American leadership in the sector must not be compromised.
His position comes after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and SpaceX founder Elon Musk backed calls for the industry to slow the development of increasingly advanced AI systems while stronger safety measures are considered.
Trump later called Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang during Huang’s appearance at the All-In Summit in Los Angeles. Huang put the president on speakerphone, allowing Trump to tell the audience that “the robots will not be taking over.”
Vice President JD Vance has also questioned why major AI companies are asking the government to regulate the technology, adding to the administration’s resistance to a broader regulatory push.
