The President of the United States of America Donald Trump has announced that CNN, MS NOW and Politico are no longer allowed to access the White House.
The US leader accused the three media organisations of repeatedly publishing what he described as false reports about his administration.
Trump made the announcement on Friday through Truth Social.
“I am proud to announce that, effective immediately, I am banning Fake News CNN, MSNOW (who recently changed their name from MSNBC due to lack of viewership and credibility!), and Politico (The recipients of an illegal and ridiculous $8 Million Dollar subscription, an All Time Record, directly from the United States Government, under Crooked Joe Biden, in order to keep them “alive.” Seems like corruption to me!), from the White House as a result of their constant “reporting” FAKE NEWS!” Trump said.
He accused the outlets of publishing what he called “FICTION and LIES” when reporting on his presidency, administration and the United States.
“Media Outlets shouldn’t be able to constantly write or report FICTION and LIES when they’re covering the President of the United States, the Trump Administration, or the United States of America,” Trump added.
The president also suggested that the restrictions could be extended to other news organisations.
He said, “Other Fake News Media Outlets to follow. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
Trump’s announcement comes amid ongoing disputes between his administration and sections of the American news media over coverage of his presidency. CNN, MS NOW and Politico are among major outlets that regularly report from Washington and cover the White House.
It was not immediately clear from Trump’s announcement exactly how the ban would be implemented or whether it would affect all forms of access to the White House, including press briefings, presidential events and the broader White House press pool. A report on the announcement noted that Trump did not specify whether the measure concerned press credentials, event access or another form of access.
The White House press rotation released earlier in September had included CNN in the television rotation for September 16, while Politico was listed in the print rotation for September 14. The published schedule illustrates the role of major news organisations in the White House press operation.
Trump also singled out Politico over an alleged $8 million government subscription during the administration of former President Joe Biden. He described the payment as “illegal and ridiculous” and alleged that it was intended to keep the publication operating.
That allegation was included in Trump’s post announcing the restrictions, although he did not provide supporting details in the announcement itself.
The move has also raised questions about press access and constitutional protections for the media. Reuters reported that the development could add to concerns over the First Amendment, which protects freedom of speech and the press in the United States.
Trump has previously taken measures against media organisations during his presidency. In February 2025, his administration restricted Associated Press journalists from access to the Oval Office, Air Force One and other events after the news organisation declined to adopt his preferred name for the Gulf of Mexico. The AP subsequently challenged the restriction in court, with the case continuing at the time of the latest reports.
Meanwhile, in August, a United States federal court has struck down a Trump administration policy that suspended immigrant visa processing for citizens of Nigeria and 74 other countries.
The ruling was delivered by U.S. District Judge Jeannette Vargas at the Southern District of New York on Friday, August 21.
The court found that the policy, introduced by the U.S. Department of State in January, was unlawful and went beyond the authority granted to Secretary of State Marco Rubio under federal immigration law.
