Tinubu Hails King Sunny Ade At 80, Says His Music Transcends Borders

President Bola  Tinubu has celebrated Nigerian music legend, Chief Sunday Adeniyi Adegeye, popularly known as King Sunny Ade, on his 80th birthday, describing him as an icon of musical excellence and cultural ambassadorship.

Tinubu, in a statement personally signed by him  on Tuesday, praised the juju music maestro for his contributions to the Nigerian creative industry and his role in taking the country’s cultural heritage to audiences around the world.

The President said King Sunny Ade’s music had transcended borders, bringing joy to millions of people across generations while projecting Nigeria’s rich cultural identity internationally.

He said, “For eight decades, you have exemplified musical excellence and cultural ambassadorship, enriching our nation and bringing joy to millions across generations.”

Tinubu noted that through his extraordinary talent, creativity, discipline and enduring passion, King Sunny Ade had transformed juju music into a globally recognised Nigerian cultural treasure.

According to him, the music legend’s distinctive sound, masterful blend of guitar, talking drums and other traditional instruments, as well as his innovative approach to music, had earned him a distinguished place in the history of African arts and entertainment.

The President further commended King Sunny Ade for his role as a cultural ambassador, saying his career had demonstrated that Nigeria’s cultural heritage could transcend borders and communicate powerfully with people worldwide.

“Beyond your musical accomplishments, you have remained a proud ambassador of Nigeria, demonstrating through your career that our cultural heritage can transcend borders and speak powerfully to people everywhere,” Tinubu said.

He also acknowledged the musician’s influence on generations of artists and practitioners in the Nigerian creative industry.

Tinubu said King Sunny Ade’s music had gone beyond entertainment to preserve the country’s cultural identity, celebrate its traditions and showcase Nigeria’s diversity to the world.

“As President, I deeply recognise and celebrate the immense contributions of our cultural icons,” he stated, expressing gratitude to God for the grace given to the music legend.

The President described King Sunny Ade’s 80th birthday as a milestone that reflected excellence, perseverance and service to the arts.

He said the musician’s achievements demonstrated how talent, when combined with dedication and commitment to one’s heritage, could become an enduring national legacy.

Tinubu, on behalf of his family, the Federal Government and the people of Nigeria, extended heartfelt congratulations to the music icon and prayed for his good health, wisdom and many more fulfilling years.
