2 Weeks After Shutdown, Learning Resumes In Unity Colleges

Learning has resumed in Federal Unity Colleges across Abuja and environs following a two-week disruption caused by an industrial action by staff of the schools.

The schools, which were scheduled to resume for the 2026/2027 academic session on September 13, remained shut after the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASCSN) directed its members to keep the colleges closed over concerns surrounding the proposed concession of King’s College, Lagos.

The industrial action was suspended on September 23 following an agreement involving ASCSN, the Nigeria Labour Congress (TUC) and zonal coordinators of the Unity Schools.

LEADERSHIP gathered that following the suspension, boarding students began returning to their schools on Sunday, September 27, while day students resumed on Monday, September 28.

A visit by LEADERSHIP to the Federal Government Boys’ College, Apo, on Monday at 9 am, showed some students roaming around the schools while normal academic activities continues.

Although the our reporter was not granted access into the school premises, students were observed moving around the school and attending classes.

Security personnel at the gate also confirmed that academic activities had resumed.

Similarly, at the Federal Science and Technical College, Orozo, boarding students returned to school on Sunday, while day students resumed on Monday.

Academic activities had also commenced at the college, with students seen attending classes as the school settled back into the new academic session.

A parent whose child attends Federal Government Boys’ College, Apo, (name withheld) confirmed the resumption  saying, “Yes, Federal Government Boys’ College, Apo resumed. I took my son there yesterday.”
