2027: Kwankwaso And I Won’t Buy Votes – Obi

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, says his ticket will not engage in vote-buying ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Obi, who spoke at a town hall meeting in Sokoto on Thursday alongside his running mate, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, said no funds would be made available to party agents for voter inducement.

He linked the monetisation of elections to the country’s worsening poverty.

“We are not ready to give money to party agents to entice voters. That is vote-buying, and it is part of the reason why poverty continues to rise in the country,” Obi said.

The former Anambra governor said his administration would ensure voters are protected and their votes count, while also tackling corruption in the system.

He said fighting corruption in the fuel subsidy regime would come before any new approach to easing the burden of fuel costs.

“We will eradicate corruption, especially the one related to fuel subsidy, before we find a way to return subsidy in another dimension,” he said.

The coordinator of the Obi/Kwankwaso movement in Sokoto, Nasiru Tambuwal, in his remarks, faulted the Muslim-Muslim ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC), noting that since 1999, the tradition had been a Muslim-Christian balance until the APC departed from it.

Kwankwaso, on his part, said the ticket is focused on the welfare of ordinary Nigerians.

“The Obi/Kwankwaso government is ready to work for the masses of this country,” Kwankwaso said.
