Court Process Stalls Local Government Election In Imo – Commissioner

Imo State government has revealed that the local council election scheduled to hold in September has been stalled by an ongoing court process.

The commissioner for Information, Public Orientation and Strategy, Hon. Declan Emelumba, said that opposition parties had taken the State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC) to court seeking to stop the election.
He said APGA and NDC specifically asked the court to stop the election on several grounds, adding that the substantive suits had been adjourned to 30th October for hearing.

Emelumba said it would have been irresponsible for the government to proceed with the election while the legal challenges were pending before the court.

“No law-abiding government will proceed with such an election when two political parties are in court against its conduct,” the commissioner said.
He added that the government was looking forward to a speedy resolution of the court proceedings to enable them to fix a new date for the election.
