Mother Defends Husband After Viral Giants Game Clip Sparks Backlash

A mother who became known online as “mom of the year” after being filmed carrying her baby and several food containers at a San Francisco Giants game has defended her husband following a wave of criticism directed at him.

Erika Alvarez attended the Giants’ September 22 game against the Minnesota Twins with her husband, Ramses, and their young daughter, Anastasia. During the broadcast, commentators Mike Krukow and Duane Kuiper joked about Alvarez juggling the baby and food, with the pair eventually dubbing her “mom of the year”.

The footage quickly spread online, prompting some viewers to criticise Ramses and make assumptions about the couple’s marriage.

Alvarez addressed the reaction in a Substack post on September 25, saying the broadcast had initially amused the couple before online commentary turned the situation around.

‘There Was More Happening That Night’

Alvarez explained that she had left her seat during the fifth inning to use the restroom. Ramses offered to take their daughter, but she chose to keep the baby because of the chilly evening and also changed her nappy.

While away, she sent her husband a photograph of the food menu and asked what he wanted. She returned with brisket sandwiches and loaded fries, saying Ramses helped clear her seat and offered to take the food from her.

Alvarez also revealed that Ramses had recently lost one of his oldest childhood friends, a baseball player, and was grieving the death. She said she suggested the Giants game as an opportunity for him to remember his friend and have some time to reflect.

“The camera showed what I was carrying in my hands. It couldn’t show what he was carrying that night,” she wrote.

Alvarez said the couple have been together for nine years and is raising two children under two. She urged people not to judge an entire relationship from a brief clip that did not capture the full context of their evening.

“Ramses is an amazing husband and an even better father,” she wrote.
