Same Behaviour Can Have Different Consequences, Actor Chiwetalu Agu Warns

Veteran Nollywood actor Chiwetalu Agu has cautioned people against assuming that they will face the same consequences as others for engaging in similar behaviour.

Agu gave the warning in a video shared by YabaLeftOnline on X on Monday, where he discussed differences in how society treats men and women over their sexual history, as well as how financial and social status can influence the consequences of people’s choices.

According to the veteran actor, a man who has had sexual relationships with several women may still find a partner willing to marry him, while women with fewer sexual partners may face greater scrutiny and rejection because of their past.

He said the difference is partly because a man’s sexual history may be difficult to establish, whereas women may face more visible or socially damaging consequences when details of their past become known.

“A man can sleep with 30 to 40 women and still end up with the woman who is ready to settle down with him. A woman can sleep with 7 to 10 men and end up being rejected simply because of her past.”

Agu added that the consequences of the same behaviour could vary depending on the individual and the circumstances surrounding them.

“There will hardly be any evidence that a man slept with 30 to 40 women and even if there is, it may not be a problem to some people.

“But there may be millions of pieces of evidence that a woman slept with 7 to 10 men which is likely to cause a major issue.”

The actor therefore urged people to consider how their decisions could affect them before engaging in actions simply because others are doing the same thing.

“This is one of the reasons why you should be careful about the path you tread. What favors will be might not favor Ada.

“What favors Mr. A might not favor Mrs. B. People don’t always face the same social consequences for the same behavior. The behavior is the same, but the consequences are different.”

He described this as a perceived double standard in the way sexual histories are judged, stressing that people should not assume that similar choices will produce identical outcomes.

Agu also used drug use to illustrate how wealth and access to resources can determine how people deal with the consequences of risky behaviour.

“You are doing drugs with a rich man’s child. Tomorrow when things go wrong, they will fly him abroad for treatment and rehab, while you pick up a cutlass and start chasing us around about the moment.

“The behavior is the same, but the resources available to deal with the consequences are different.”

According to him, people should not assume that sharing the same experience with another person means they will suffer equally if things go wrong.

“Don’t assume that because someone is doing something with you that you will both suffer the consequences equally. We are all humans, but some humans have more to lose than the others. Not all humans are treated the same.”

The veteran actor urged people to think beyond the immediate gratification or excitement associated with their decisions and consider their ability to deal with possible negative outcomes.

“Always learn to look before you leap. Before you act, think about the consequences of your action. Think beyond the moment.

“Ask yourself, if this goes wrong, how badly will I suffer? And do I have the resources to recover?”

Agu concluded by emphasising that wisdom involves understanding one’s limitations and recognising choices that could carry consequences beyond one’s ability to recover.

“Few people can jump from the same lane and still learn very differently. Life is not perfectly equal. Wisdom is not knowing what you can do.

“It is knowing what you cannot afford to do.”
