Yobe Holds Peaceful LG Election As APC Wins 17 Chairmanship Seats

The Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission (YOSIEC) has successfully conducted the 2026 Local Government Council elections across the 17 Local Government Areas of the state, with the All Progressives Congress (APC) winning all the 17 chairmanship seats.

The election, held on Saturday, September 26, 2026, covered all 178 electoral wards across the state, with 10 political parties participating in the exercise.

Announcing the results in Damaturu, the Executive Chairman of YOSIEC, Dr. Ibrahim Mohammed Yabani, described the exercise as the concluding phase of the commission’s election timetable, following the successful conduct of voting, counting and collation of results.

According to him, the commission had meticulously followed the election timetable, which was initially rolled out on April 23, 2025, under the leadership of the late former chairman of the commission, Dr. Mamman Mohammed.

Yabani, who assumed leadership of the commission in January 2026, said the commission commenced its preparations by consulting critical stakeholders and subsequently proceeded with the electoral process in accordance with the approved timetable.

He said the election was successfully conducted across the state’s 178 electoral wards and 17 local government areas.

“Following the close of polls earlier yesterday, votes were counted, collated, and the results for the Councillors were declared at the ward levels, while those for the Chairmen were declared at the respective Local Government collation centres,” he said.

The results announced by the commission showed APC candidates emerging victorious in all 17 chairmanship contests.

In Bade, Musa Kalan Dagona polled 54,312 votes; Lawan Bukar won Bursari with 24,331 votes, while Bukar Adamu secured Damaturu with 18,465 votes.

Abdulmumini Usaini won Fika with 61,326 votes, while Alhaji Baba Goni Bade emerged winner in Fune with 74,411 votes. Alhaji Mohammed Musa won Geidam with 35,832 votes, while Alhaji Dala Mala secured Gujba with 27,900 votes.

In Gulani, Alhaji Dayyabu Ilu polled 35,999 votes, while Umaru Aguwa won Jakusko with 47,653 votes. Alhaji Umara Mohammed emerged winner in Karasuwa with 39,320 votes, while Idriss Mai Bukar won Machina with 24,092 votes.

Samaila Musa won Nangere with 37,780 votes, while Mohammed Ahmed Mairami secured Nguru with 45,836 votes. Alhaji Salisu Muktari won Potiskum with 58,705 votes.

Mohammed Lamido Musa emerged winner in Tarmuwa with 19,500 votes, while Hon. Zanna Zakariya won Yunusari with 35,848 votes. In Yusufari, Adam Jibrin emerged victorious with 31,930 votes.

The commission’s chairman said the successful completion of the exercise marked the conclusion of the electoral timeline, with the results formally announced after the completion of counting and collation processes.

Meanwhile, the Yobe State Deputy Governor, Hon. Idi Barde Gubana, has, after successfully casting his vote at Polling Unit 008, Gubana Primary School, Dogon Kuka Ward, Fune Local Government Area, commended the Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission (YOSIEC) for the peaceful and hitch-free conduct of the local government elections.

A statement issued by the Press Secretary to the Deputy Governor Hussani Mai Suleh said Gubana who also expressed satisfaction with the voter turnout in the area, said the development was an indication that democracy had come to stay and had been accepted by the people as the best form of government.

He stressed the need for sustained voter education and sensitisation across the state to strengthen democratic participation and foster a more robust democratic process.
