FCT Civil Service: 10,700 Workers To Write Promotion Exam

More than 10,700 workers across 145 cadres in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Civil Service are to participate in the 2026 promotion exercise scheduled to commence on October 5.

Chairman of the FCT Civil Service Commission, Emeka Eze, disclosed this after the commission’s meeting to finalise arrangements for the exercise, saying the promotion examination would be conducted through Computer-Based Testing (CBT).

Eze said the exercise followed the approval and reconsideration by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, adding that eligible workers would compete for available vacancies in accordance with the Public Service Rules.

He said promotion would be based strictly on merit and the vacancies declared in line with the approved organogram and structure of the various FCT agencies.

“The 2026 promotion exercise for all FCT workers, totaling over 10,700 people across 145 cadres, will commence on October 5,” he said.

According to him, the commission has put measures in place to ensure a smooth and hitch-free exercise, similar to the previous year’s promotion examination.

Eze said the commission had also made progress in clearing the backlog of promotions inherited by the administration, noting that workers who participated successfully in the 2025 promotion exercise in July had received their promotion letters.

He said the ongoing exercise was part of the minister’s directive to clear all outstanding promotion backlogs so that, from 2027, the commission would operate within a regular annual promotion window.

“Basically, with this, we will have cleared all the backlog of promotions we inherited, making it so that by 2027, we’ll only be conducting 2027 as a window.

“That is the directive of the minister, that we must clear all the backlogs so that the commission and the civil servants will get their promotion as a window. And that’s what we are doing,” he said.

The chairman urged candidates to prepare adequately for the examination and comply strictly with the rules governing the exercise.

He said candidates would not be allowed to enter the examination hall with mobile phones and must come with their regulation letters and letters of confirmation, among other required documents.

Eze explained that each candidate would have 45 minutes to complete the CBT, after which the system would automatically shut down and display the candidate’s result.

He said candidates’ names and examination details had been uploaded on the commission’s website, where eligible workers could obtain their login details and passwords.

“Once you click in, your name will appear automatically. You tell your name, your cadre, your level, and then it will ask you to click. You start, your time starts counting.

“At the end of 45 minutes, it automatically shuts down, and your result, your performance comes on there,” he said.

Eze advised candidates to remain calm during the exercise, follow all instructions and avoid actions that could jeopardise their participation.

The exercise, he said, would enable the commission to discharge its statutory responsibility of promoting eligible civil servants while ensuring that advancement within the FCT Public Service is based on merit.
