Gov Yusuf Inaugurates Water Distribution Channel In Kano After 30 Years Of Inactivity

Kano State governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has commissioned the resumption of water distribution from the Goron Dutse Reservoir, marking the facility’s return to active service after over 30 years of abandonment.

The commissioner for Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change, Dr Dahiru Muhammad Hashim, disclosed this in a statement yesterday following the ceremony in Kano.

According to Hashim, the development represents a significant step towards improving the reliability of public water supply across Kano metropolis, with water now being pumped from the Challawa Water Treatment Plant into the Goron Dutse reservoirs for distribution to communities.

At the ceremony, Governor Yusuf described the revival of the reservoir as a historic achievement for the state and an important intervention for residents who have faced longstanding challenges in accessing potable water.

“This is a historic project for Kano State. The Goron Dutse Reservoir has been abandoned for more than 30 years, and today we are bringing it back into operation to serve the people of Kano,” Yusuf said.

The governor said the restoration of the facility was part of his administration’s broader efforts to revive critical infrastructure and address longstanding challenges affecting residents.

He added that the commencement of water distribution from Goron Dutse would help improve access to potable water across Kano metropolis, while reaffirming his administration’s commitment to completing other critical water projects across the state.

Hashim explained that the Goron Dutse facility has a combined storage capacity of approximately 39.8 million litres, comprising three reservoirs with capacities of 10 million litres, 7.3 million litres and 22.5 million litres respectively.

The commissioner commended Governor Yusuf for prioritising the facility’s revival, saying the administration’s political and administrative support was instrumental in returning the reservoir to service.

The N11 billion project, executed by the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), includes rehabilitation and other works at the Challawa Water Treatment Plant, as well as the transmission system supplying the Goron Dutse distribution station.

Hashim said the main transmission pipeline linking Challawa to the Goron Dutse distribution station spans approximately 15.6 kilometres.

The project was initially scheduled for completion by December 2026, but the facility is now operational ahead of that date.

Hashim further reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to restoring critical water infrastructure and expanding access to safe and reliable water for households, businesses and communities across Kano State.
