Institute Prioritises Safety Regulation In Electrical Engineering

The Chartered Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of Nigeria (CIEEEN) has announced plans to prioritise safety regulation in its regulatory agenda, particularly hazards associated with imported electrical and electronic products and incidents of electrocution.

Its president, Engr. Kings Adeyemi, disclosed this during CIEEEN’s maiden interactive meeting with registered and prospective members held virtually on 26 th September, 2026.

The meeting, attended by 179 chief and principal engineering consultants, provided an opportunity for the institute’s leadership to outline its regulatory priorities, strategic direction, and plans to strengthen professional standards within Nigeria’s electrical and electronic engineering profession.

According to the meeting report, Adeyemi is expected to lead the development and finalisation of CIEEEN’s first regulation, with safety taking precedence over some elements of the Institute’s broader five-year implementation programme.

The proposed regulation is expected to address safety concerns arising from imported electrical and electronic items as well as electrocution incidents, reflecting the Institute’s stated focus on strengthening professional regulation and protecting the public.

The meeting also addressed the backlog of membership applications, particularly applications submitted since December 2025.

Adeyemi apologised to affected applicants and explained that the delay was due to the establishment of the Institute’s Examination Board, the development and approval of the Regulatory Guidelines for Registration, and the need to address the representation of certain specialisations on the Board.

The Examination Board has been directed to prioritise the processing of pending applications and improve communication with applicants.

CIEEEN also disclosed ongoing discussions with the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA) on mutual recognition and regulatory coordination, with the objective of minimising duplication in certification and sanctions affecting practitioners.

The Institute is also planning a formal engagement with the Nigerian Institution of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (NIEEE), while discussions with the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) are also being pursued.

The interactive meeting further featured the presentation of CIEEEN’s Five-Year Strategic Management Plan for 2026–2030, covering regulatory development, certification, lifelong learning, enforcement and compliance, stakeholder engagement, international partnerships and financial sustainability.

The Institute also plans to establish training and certification centres for craftsmen and technicians, led by qualified technologists and engineers, as part of efforts to formalise informal practice and address identified knowledge gaps.
