The Joint Public Service Negotiating Council (JPSNC) in Cross River State has declared a 3-day warning strike commencing from midnight on Friday, October 2, 2026.
Chairman of the Council (Cross River State), Comrade Raymond Akan, disclosed this in Calabar on Friday, stating that the industrial action would run through Sunday.
Akan said the Council is currently in contact with the national leadership of Organised Labour in Abuja for further directives.
“I have urged my members to wait for further directives as we are linking up with Abuja for national directives, we will communicate same to them,” he said.
He explained that the strike was informed by the worsening hardship faced by workers in Cross River and Nigerians at large, noting that Labour had expected President Bola Tinubu to address critical issues in his Independence Day broadcast.
“Our expectation was that the President would make positive pronouncements in terms of the hardship and the economy, the fuel increment and other sundry issues,” Akana said.
He added that “the message of the President has nothing to do with the hardship and the underlying issues that Labour had asked government to implement which government has not paid attention to.”
According to him, the President’s broadcast showed no sensitivity to the plight of citizens. “Yesterday’s broadcast had nothing to show that government is sensitive about the plight of the citizens. That is what informed the strike,” he said.
Akan warned that failure by government to act may lead to a total shutdown. “If nothing is being done, a full-blown strike would be declared. For now, it is 3-day. From midnight today which is Friday the 2nd of October to Sunday,” he stated.
