Days after spending his first night at the Kuje Correctional Centre without eating, the embattled director-general of the purported Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council, Adeniyi Adeyemi, has reportedly been allowed to provide his own meals and given special accommodation at the correctional facility.
LEADERSHIP Sunday gathered exclusively from a top source at the Kuje correctional facility that the decision followed the newspaper’s earlier report that Adeyemi appeared demoralised and had refused to eat on his first day at the facility, as calls from different quarters reportedly flooded in.
The source, who pleaded not to be named, further told our correspondent that the latest development came less than 12 hours after LEADERSHIP reported that Adeyemi’s family members and close associates had yet to visit him, 24 hours after his arrival at Kuje.

“Since the report, the story has changed. Prominent Nigerians, some arriving in black-tinted SUVs and other high-end vehicles, have been tripping into Kuje to see Adeyemi,” the source said.
He said that the visits appeared aimed at reassuring him and lifting his spirits after he reportedly refused food, spent his first night awake and appeared demoralised. Apart from his family members, some other people have also been coming to see him,” the source added.
When our correspondent pressed further to ascertain the nature of the accommodation granted to the embattled agency boss, the top source was guarded in his response, saying, “I can only tell you that he is in the prison, but big men have special places in prison facilities.
The steady stream of visitors to the facility has also brought renewed attention to the circumstances surrounding his detention, particularly following the earlier absence of family members and close associates.
While details of the identities of the prominent visitors were not immediately available, LEADERSHIP Sunday gathered that visits began on Friday evening and continued into Saturday morning.
Adeyemi was remanded at Kuje following his arraignment over allegations connected to the activities of the purported Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council. He remains in custody pending further proceedings in the case.
LEADERSHIP Sunday explains that the issue of inmates providing their own meals is not entirely new to Nigeria’s correctional system. This is because under the former Nigerian Prisons Regulations, detainees could elect to provide their own food, subject to conditions set by the prison authorities.
However, those regulations operated under the former prisons regime as the current legal basis following the enactment of the Nigerian Correctional Service Act, 2019, repealed the Prisons Act.
Under the current correctional framework, feeding is ordinarily provided by the Nigerian Correctional Service, although reports from the Service indicate that inmates may, under specified circumstances, be permitted to make arrangements for their own feeding.
