The Economist Prediction: We Don’t See Tinubu Winning Except Through Rigging — NDC

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has said it does not see any pathway to victory for President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election except through outright rigging and manipulation, which Nigerians are ready to resist this time around.

The opposition party said this while reacting to a report by The Economist magazine that Tinubu may still be re-elected despite growing public discontent over insecurity, economic hardship and the performance of his government.

In the report, titled, ‘Nigerians Dislike Their President, But May Re-elect Him Anyway,’ the publication stated that Tinubu appeared relatively unconcerned about his re-election prospects despite the challenges confronting the country.

“On the face of it, Mr. Tinubu’s cool is surprising,” the publication stated, pointing to Nigeria’s worsening security situation and economic pressures.

“Nigeria is suffering a worsening security crisis, with people kidnapped and killed by bandits or insurgents on a near-daily basis,” The Economist said.

But in an interview with LEADERSHIP, the National Publicity Secretary of the NDC, Osa Director, queried why The Economist article agreed that Tinubu is so unpopular but arrived at the conclusion that he would still win despite that.

Director maintained that the magazine’s conclusion was not based on the facts and statistics that it itself identified as Tinubu’s Achilles’ heels.

“The Economist article agreed that Tinubu is so unpopular. So, how did it arrive at the conclusion that he would still win despite that? The article decided to leave many things unsaid.

“Its conclusion was not based on the facts and statistics that it itself identified as Tinubu’s Achilles’ heels.

“For us at the NDC, we don’t see any pathway to victory for Tinubu, save through outright rigging and manipulation, which Nigerians are ready to resist this time around,” he stated.
