The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has ordered the immediate arrest and prosecution of motorists found with vehicles without valid licence plates, tinted glasses without permits or concealing their vehicle registration numbers.
The command also warned motorists against using fake diplomatic number plates or diplomatic plates by unauthorised persons within the FCT.
The commissioner of police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, gave the directive yesterday, saying the proliferation of vehicles with concealed, defaced or deliberately faded number plates posed serious security concerns in the nation’s capital.
According to him, some criminal elements have been using such vehicles to evade detection, identification and arrest while committing or fleeing from offences.
Sanusi specifically raised concern over the use of SUVs with concealed or missing number plates, stressing that vehicle identification was critical to effective policing and public safety in the FCT.
He directed police officers across Abuja to intensify enforcement of existing laws governing vehicle identification and the use of tinted glasses.
The commissioner said motorists found violating the relevant laws would be arrested and prosecuted immediately in accordance with the law.
He, however, directed police personnel involved in the enforcement exercise to conduct themselves professionally and warned them against using the operation as an avenue for extortion.
“The Federal Capital Territory is a peculiar environment where the use of such vehicles poses significant security concerns, as it may hinder effective identification and tracking by law enforcement agencies,” the commissioner said.
The police command urged residents to cooperate with security agencies by reporting suspicious vehicles and activities to the nearest police station.
Members of the public can also contact the FCT Police Command on its emergency lines: 08032003913 and 08028940883.
