Canada Suspends Medical Assisted Dying For People With Mental Illness

Canada has indefinitely suspended plans to expand its medically assisted dying programme to people whose sole medical condition is mental illness.

The decision follows concerns over the lack of consensus on who should qualify for medically assisted dying, known as MAID, under the proposed expansion.

As reported by the BBC, Canada’s Justice Minister, Sean Fraser, announced the decision on Wednesday, saying the government believed it was the appropriate course of action despite the continuing debate.

“While there is not a perfect consensus on this issue, we believe this is the correct approach,” Fraser said.

The proposed expansion has generated significant debate in Canada, with supporters arguing that excluding people whose sole medical condition is mental illness from MAID violates their constitutional rights and denies them equal access to healthcare.

Opponents and other stakeholders, however, have raised concerns about the potential risks of extending assisted dying to people whose sole underlying condition is mental illness, particularly over questions surrounding eligibility and safeguards.

The decision comes after a parliamentary panel earlier this year recommended that MAID should not be expanded to people with mental illness as their only medical condition.

The government’s latest move means the proposed expansion will remain suspended indefinitely.

However, the issue is not settled, as a federal court case remains ongoing. The case challenges the government’s earlier decision to delay access to MAID for people whose sole condition is mental illness.

The government’s decision is therefore expected to remain the subject of legal and public debate as Canada considers how its assisted-dying framework should apply to people with mental illness.
