Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has sworn in 68 legal practitioners as Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) during the ceremony marking the 2026/2027 legal year.
The swearing-in ceremony marks a significant moment for the newly elevated lawyers, who have attained one of the highest professional distinctions in Nigeria’s legal profession.
The rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria is conferred on legal practitioners in recognition of their professional standing and contributions to the development of law and the administration of justice.
Politics Nigeria reports that the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) announced the development on Monday through a news flash published on its official X account.
The announcement was accompanied by a video and photographs showing the newly elevated lawyers taking their oaths before the Chief Justice of Nigeria.
The footage showed a cross-section of the recipients participating in the ceremony as they formally assumed their new status within the legal profession.
The ceremony also coincided with the commencement of the 2026/2027 legal year, an important period in the Nigerian judiciary’s calendar.
The opening of a new legal year provides an opportunity for the judiciary to resume its annual activities and reflect on the administration of justice across the country.
The rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria is a prestigious distinction within the country’s legal system.
It is awarded to legal practitioners who meet established requirements relating to professional competence, experience, integrity and contributions to the legal profession.
Recipients are drawn from practitioners who have demonstrated the standards required for elevation under the applicable guidelines.
The conferment process is overseen by the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee, which considers applications and determines eligible candidates in line with the rules governing the award.
The committee is chaired by the Chief Justice of Nigeria.
The SAN title is widely regarded as the Nigerian equivalent of the King’s Counsel distinction used in some other legal jurisdictions.
However, the award remains governed by Nigeria’s own legal framework and professional standards.
For the 68 recipients, the new rank brings recognition as well as expectations regarding their conduct and responsibilities as senior members of the Bar. Senior Advocates are expected to uphold professional ethics, maintain high standards of advocacy and contribute to the advancement of legal practice.
The judiciary continues to play a central role in resolving disputes, interpreting the law and protecting constitutional rights.
Legal practitioners, particularly those entrusted with the SAN rank, are expected to support these responsibilities through professional conduct and effective representation of their clients.
Although NTA confirmed the swearing-in of the 68 lawyers, its initial announcement did not provide further details about the individual recipients or the full proceedings at the ceremony.
The names of the newly elevated SANs and additional information about the event are expected to emerge as more details become available.
Justice Kekere-Ekun, as head of Nigeria’s judiciary, presided over the ceremony in her capacity as Chief Justice of Nigeria.
The event formally recognised the 68 recipients and their admission into the senior rank of the Nigerian Bar.
Further details about the newly sworn-in Senior Advocates of Nigeria and other proceedings surrounding the opening of the 2026/2027 legal year are expected to follow.
