Mexico Finally Approves Reno Omokri As Nigerian Ambassador

Mexico has formally approved Reno Omokri’s appointment as Nigeria’s ambassador to the country, clearing a major hurdle in his diplomatic posting after months of waiting for the Mexican government’s consent.

Omokri disclosed the development on Tuesday through a post on X, announcing that the Mexican Embassy in Abuja had delivered the diplomatic document confirming his acceptance by the Mexican government.

The approval, known as agrément, allows the process of his deployment to Mexico to move forward.

According to Omokri, José Manuel Briseño Flores, the Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of the United Mexican States in Abuja, presented the document to Ambassador Babagana Wakil, Director of Protocol at Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Sharing the news, Omokri expressed gratitude over the development and confirmed the diplomatic responsibilities attached to his appointment.

“To God be the glory, the Chargé d’affaires of the Embassy of the United Mexican States in Abuja, Mr José Manuel Briseño Flores, today in Abuja delivered the agrément from the Government of the United Mexican States accepting me, Bemigho Reno Omokri, to serve as Ambassador Extraordinaire and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the United Mexican States, with concurrent accreditation to the Republic of Guatemala, the Republic of Honduras, and the Republic of Nicaragua,” he wrote.

The approval means Omokri is set to represent Nigeria in Mexico, while also handling diplomatic responsibilities involving Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.

His concurrent accreditation will allow him to serve as Nigeria’s diplomatic representative to the three Central American countries alongside his primary posting in Mexico.

The development brings an end to months of uncertainty surrounding his deployment, which had remained incomplete despite his nomination by President Bola Tinubu and subsequent confirmation by the Nigerian Senate.

Tinubu nominated Omokri for an ambassadorial position in November 2025 as part of a wider list of nominees submitted for diplomatic appointments.

The list included former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, and former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Mahmood Yakubu.

The nominations formed part of the Federal Government’s efforts to fill diplomatic positions and appoint representatives to Nigeria’s foreign missions.

The Senate subsequently confirmed Omokri and other nominees in December 2025, paving the way for the next stage of the appointment process.

However, Senate confirmation alone was not enough to complete his deployment.

Under established diplomatic practice, the receiving country must first agree to accept a proposed ambassador before the appointment can proceed to its final stages.

Tinubu later approved the postings of 65 ambassadors-designate and high commissioners on March 6, 2026.

Omokri was assigned to Mexico City, but his posting remained subject to formal acceptance by the Mexican government.

The delay raised questions about when he would officially take up the diplomatic assignment, particularly as other ambassadorial postings were moving through the implementation process.

In August, Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed that Mexico and Japan were among the countries that had yet to communicate formal acceptance of two outstanding ambassadorial appointments.

The ministry said it was engaging the countries concerned and expressed confidence that the necessary approvals would be received.

Before the approval was announced, Omokri had rejected suggestions that Mexico had turned down his appointment.

During an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today in June, he attributed the delay to diplomatic procedures and preparations surrounding the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which Mexico is co-hosting with the United States and Canada.

His comments came amid public discussion about the status of his appointment and the absence of formal confirmation from the Mexican government.

Reno had previously served as a media aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan and became widely known for his interventions on national issues, political debates and government policies.
