2027: Tinubu’s Economic Reforms Need Continuity, Sanusi Tells Nigerians

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Abdul Sanusi, has called on Nigerians to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027, arguing that continuity is necessary to sustain the administration’s economic reforms.

Sanusi, a former aspirant for the Ankpa/Omala/Olamaboro Federal Constituency seat, appealed in Abuja on Thursday while fielding questions from journalists.

He urged political parties and their supporters to shun violence ahead of the 2027 general election.

Sanusi said the economic reforms might be difficult in the short term but maintained that the country needed to sustain their implementation to realise the expected benefits.

“Economic reform is never easy. Whenever a nation takes bold steps to correct long-standing structural problems, there is pressure on households and businesses,” he said.

“But we must not judge a journey by its most difficult stretch.”

He urged eligible voters to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and participate actively in the 2027 elections.

Sanusi said he supported Tinubu’s re-election to enable the President to complete the reforms initiated by his administration.

The APC chieftain also cautioned against proposals to reintroduce the petrol subsidy, arguing that public resources should instead be channelled into infrastructure, education, healthcare and social welfare.

“For years, the subsidy regime drained public resources, fed inefficiency and benefited a few at the expense of the many,” he said.

“We cannot move forward by returning to what held us back.”

Sanusi called on APC members to strengthen grassroots mobilisation, engage voters and communicate the administration’s policies and achievements ahead of the elections.

He urged party members to put aside personal grievances and disagreements arising from primary elections, saying unity would be essential to the party’s electoral prospects.

On electoral conduct, he warned politicians and their supporters against inflammatory rhetoric and actions that could threaten public peace.

“Election is not a do-or-die affair. It is a democratic process in which citizens exercise their right to choose who leads them.

“No political position is worth the blood of any Nigerian, the destruction of property or the peace of our communities,” he said.

He called on the media to uphold fairness, balance and responsible reporting, stressing that journalists had an important role to play in informing voters and reducing political tensions.

Sanusi also urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies to remain neutral and professional throughout the electoral process.

He said the credibility of the election would depend on respect for voters’ rights and the protection of the democratic process.

The APC chieftain urged Nigerians to prioritise national unity and peaceful participation as political activities ahead of the 2027 general election gathered momentum.

“Let us choose peace over violence, progress over nostalgia and continuity over disruption,” he said.
