The Kwara State Publicity Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Abubakar Basambo, has resigned his membership of the party.
The politician accused some leaders of hypocrisy, dishonesty and double standards.
Basambo announced his resignation in a letter dated October 23, addressed to the state chairman of the party through the chairman of Magaji Are 1 Ward and the chairman of the party in Ilorin East Local Government Area.
In the letter titled ‘Letter of Resignation from ADC’, the former publicity secretary said his decision followed deep reflection on the direction of the party in Kwara State and the conduct of some members of its leadership.
He expressed dissatisfaction with what he described as a growing culture of dishonesty and double standards among some party leaders and members of the state executive committee.
“This decision was not taken lightly. After deep reflection, I can no longer cope with the direction the party is going in the state,” Basambo stated.
“There is so much hypocrisy, lies, and double standards amongst some party leaders and State Excos who parade themselves as loyal leaders,” he added.
The former spokesman also criticised the party’s governorship candidate, Zakari Mohammed, alleging that his arrogance, alongside what he described as dishonesty among some members, had made it difficult for him to continue working within the ADC.
Basambo warned that the alleged conduct of some party leaders could undermine the party’s development and weaken its prospects if urgent steps were not taken to address the situation.
“If this situation does not change, it will surely bring the party down. This party cannot grow with hungry and hypocritical people parading themselves as leaders,” he wrote.
Despite his grievances, Basambo expressed appreciation to those who had supported him during his time in the party. However, he maintained that he had no regrets about his decision to leave, describing it as the end of his political journey with the ADC.
He also expressed disappointment over his inability to continue working with his political leader, Abubakar Kannike, whom he said he had come to respect over the past year.
Basambo described Kannike as a man of honour and sincerity, stressing that his departure from the party would not affect the respect and appreciation he had developed for him.
He also wished the state chairman, state secretary and the party’s woman leader well in their respective positions, while thanking those who had supported him during his time with the party.
The former publicity secretary, however, maintained that he owed no apology to individuals who disliked him, signalling that his decision to resign was final.
Basambo also addressed his meeting with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Kwara State, Bolakale Kawu, insisting that the engagement was not intended to undermine the ADC or engage in anti-party activities.
He said the meeting was motivated by personal relationships and his commitment to promoting the party’s interests.
“For the purpose of clarity and to exonerate myself from any anti-party allegation, my meeting with Mallam Bolakale Kawu was purely an act of brotherhood and that of a committed member trying to canvas for the party,” he stated.
Basambo further alleged that some party leaders had been involved in similar engagements behind the scenes, suggesting that his meeting with the PDP candidate should not be treated as an isolated incident.
He thanked the ADC for giving him the opportunity to serve as its publicity secretary but confirmed that his resignation took immediate effect.
The resignation comes days after the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) governorship candidate in Bauchi State, Barrister Ibrahim Muhammad Kashim, announced his departure from the party.
Kashim resigned in a letter dated October 16, 2026, addressed to the NDC chairman in Bauchi Local Government Area, citing personal reasons for his decision.
In his letter, the former governorship candidate said he had taken the decision after careful consideration and formally notified the party of his intention to end his membership.
“I hereby formally tender my resignation from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), effective from the date of this letter,” he stated.
Kashim also thanked the party’s leadership and members for the opportunity to be associated with the NDC, describing his resignation as a personal choice.
Before his emergence as the NDC’s governorship candidate, Kashim served as Secretary to the Bauchi State Government under Governor Bala Mohammed. He was also among the governorship candidates recently listed by the Independent National Electoral Commission for the 2027 election in the state.
