The Nigerian Ambassador to the United States (US), Ambassador Lateef Kayode Are, has been invited to join the Convening Platform, an elite group for selected ambassadors and high commissioners serving in the US.
Being a platform for a few privileged group of envoys, the Platform’s invitation extended to the Nigerian ambassador, is said to be a testament to the regards accorded Nigeria over its high profile and influence around the world as well as the ambassador’s stature among his peers, especially in the security and intelligence circles.
Are, a retired army colonel, former intelligence officer and former Director -General of the Department of Security Service (DSS), presented his Letter of Credence to US President, Donald Trump at the White House on May 21, 2026.
This development is considered a “big deal” for Nigeria and the ambassador because the Convening Platform brings together Ambassadors, US Government officials, CEOs, and global executives for high-level dialogues on foreign policy, trade, and investment.
The Platform also facilitates “off-the-record” discussions between government, business, and civil society as well as hosts roundtables, briefings, and delegations during United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) meetings, in any part of the US including Washington D.C.
The Platform is a significant bridge between the US Government, Private Sector and Foreign Governments and the most important areas of focus include; geopolitics, economic diplomacy, energy, tech, and emerging markets.
It is believed that joining the prestigious platform will boost the profile of Nigeria among the comity of nations, and bring some diplomatic gains to the country.
