Army Reopens Damaturu-Maiduguri Road Shut Over Insurgency

The Nigerian Army has reopened a blocked lane along the Damaturu-Maiduguri highway near Red Bricks Quarters, ending years of closure triggered by security challenges during the peak of the Boko Haram insurgency.

The lane had remained inaccessible for several years due to security concerns at the peak of insurgent activities in the North-East. Its prolonged closure forced motorists to use a limited passage, increasing the risk of accidents.

Over time, the situation reportedly led to several crashes, resulting in loss of lives and injuries.

The reopening followed persistent complaints from community members and road users over the dangers posed by the restricted lane.

The Commanding Officer of the Nigerian Army’s 233 Battalion, Lt Col Godwin Undie, carried out the reopening exercise following directives from military authorities.

He was led to the scene by the Security Adviser to the Yobe State Governor, Brig. Gen. Dr Dahiru Abdulsalam (rtd), who played a key role in facilitating the intervention and ensuring residents’ concerns were addressed.

Following the reopening, commuters were advised to exercise caution, obey traffic regulations, and use the appropriate lanes while driving along the route.

Road users were also urged to avoid reckless overtaking, maintain discipline, and cooperate with security and traffic officials to ensure the highway remains safe for all.

Residents and motorists have commended the Nigerian Army for responding to their concerns and appreciated the efforts of the Yobe State Security Adviser for his commitment and proactive intervention.

The development highlights continued collaboration between security agencies and the Yobe State Government in promoting peace, security, and the protection of lives and property across the state.
