Group Woos TCN To Get More Women Into Engineering, Power Sector

The Nigeria Female Youth Organization (NFYO), in collaboration with Michelle Youth Initiative for Sustainable Development, has sought the partnership of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to encourage more young women to pursue careers in engineering and the power sector.

The group made the call during a courtesy visit to the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of TCN, Engr. Sule Abdulaziz, as part of activities marking the 2026 International Youth Day.

The organisation also conferred a Credence of Honour on Abdulaziz in recognition of his contributions to Nigeria’s power sector and what it described as his impactful leadership of the transmission company.

President of NFYO, Princess Mimi Peters, said the organisation deliberately chose to honour Abdulaziz because of his track record in the power sector, describing him as a role model for young Nigerians, particularly women aspiring to careers in engineering, leadership and public service.

Peters said Abdulaziz’s more than two decades of experience in the power sector had positioned him as a leader whose work had contributed significantly to the development of Nigeria’s electricity transmission network.

She cited the expansion of the national grid’s wheeling capacity to over 8,700 megawatts, the achievement of Nigeria’s highest-ever transmission peak, the attraction of over $1.16 billion in development partner funding and the commissioning of several new power transformers and other critical infrastructure as some of the milestones recorded under his leadership.

According to her, beyond the statistics, Abdulaziz had demonstrated integrity, competence and commitment to national development, making his career an inspiration to young Nigerians.

She said the proposed partnership with TCN would support the organisation’s efforts to mobilise female leaders across the 774 Local Government Areas, the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory for its youth development and energy awareness programmes.

Peters disclosed that NFYO was also preparing for the First National Female Youth Conference, with plans to mobilise 811 female leaders across the country.

Responding, Abdulaziz described electricity transmission as one of the nation’s most critical responsibilities, noting that the work of TCN often goes unnoticed despite its importance to Nigerians.

“Our job is not a small one. We don’t talk too much, but our actions and output show that we are working tirelessly to ensure Nigerians have electricity. We will not relent,” he said.

The TCN boss said the company would continue to do its best to improve electricity transmission, adding that government support remained important to achieving further progress in the sector.

Abdulaziz welcomed the proposed partnership with NFYO and expressed readiness to support initiatives aimed at youth development and encouraging more young women to pursue careers in engineering and the power sector.

He noted that TCN already had young female engineers and National Youth Service Corps members contributing to its operations.

The TCN chief executive urged the organisation to identify specific areas of collaboration, saying initiatives that promote youth participation and strengthen the country’s technical capacity would contribute to national development.
