Man Arrested For Allegedly Setting Wife Ablaze In Kogi

The Kogi State Police Command has arrested a man, Jacob Irewa, for allegedly attempting to set his wife, Berida Irawo, ablaze following a domestic disagreement at Oworo Estate, Felele, Lokoja.

The incident occurred on Friday, August 14, 2026, at about 8:30 p.m., when the B Division Surveillance Team, Felele, received a report of the incident and swiftly mobilised to the scene, leading to the suspect’s arrest.

According to the police, preliminary investigation revealed that the dispute started after the victim allegedly burnt some of her husband’s clothes which she believed he was no longer using, without his permission.

The suspect was subsequently alleged to have threatened his wife, fetched petrol from his motorcycle and set her ablaze.

The victim survived the attack and is currently receiving treatment at Honey Gold Hospital, Felele.

The police said the suspect admitted in his statement to setting his wife ablaze, while the command has commenced a comprehensive investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and gather further evidence.

The Commissioner of Police, Kogi State Command, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, condemned the incident, reiterating the Command’s zero tolerance for violence, particularly domestic violence.

He urged members of the public to seek lawful means of resolving domestic disputes and refrain from actions capable of endangering lives.

The police said the suspect would be charged to court for prosecution upon completion of the investigation.

The Command also reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property and ensuring that perpetrators of violent crimes are brought to justice.
