Nigerian-American Named  US National Youth Poet Laureate

A Nigerian-American poet, Daniel Umemezie, has been named the 2026–2027 US National Youth Poet Laureate, earning widespread recognition from the U.S. Mission in Nigeria.

Umemezie is the 10th young writer to secure the prestigious title and becomes the second Nigerian-American to hold the position. His appointment follows the historic selection of Salome Agbaroji, who became the first Nigerian-American to achieve the feat in 2023.

Through his poetry, Umemezie explores themes of heritage, identity, and the nuances of the Nigerian-American experience. His recognition marks another significant milestone for Nigerian-American representation within the United States literary scene.

Celebrating the achievement across its official social media channels, the U.S. Mission Nigeria highlighted his contribution to contemporary youth poetry and cultural storytelling.

“Meet Daniel Umemezie, the 2026-2027 U.S. National Youth Poet Laureate, the 10th poet to hold this prestigious title, and the second Nigerian-American to do so, following 2023 laureate Salome Agbaroji,” the statement read.
