National Rescue Movement (NRM) has congratulated Osun State governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, on his re-election for another term.
The party advised him to perform better during his second term in office to justify the people’s trust.
It described his victory as an affirmation of the confidence the people of the state have placed in his leadership.
In a statement signed by the national chairman of NRM, Dr Chinedu Obi, the party’s National Management Committee, National Executive Committee, and entire membership said Adeleke’s victory in the governorship election held on Saturday, 15th August, represented more than a political triumph.
The party described the outcome as a reward for what it called good governance, responsiveness, people-oriented service delivery and Adeleke’s belief in the people’s ability to determine who governs them.
NRM said the election had also reinforced the principle that political power in a democracy derives from the consent of the governed, noting that Osun voters exercised their constitutional right to choose their leader despite the challenges surrounding the electoral process.
The party commended the people of Osun State for their civic courage and commitment to democratic participation, stressing that the ballot remained the most legitimate instrument for determining political leadership.
According to the NRM, the outcome of the Osun election offers an important lesson for Nigeria’s democratic development: the credibility, competence, capacity, suitability and acceptability of a candidate can ultimately be more decisive than the political platform under which the candidate contests.
It argued that while a political party provides the vehicle for an electoral contest, a candidate’s record, character, competence, connection with the people and ability to inspire confidence can determine electoral success in a competitive election.
The NRM therefore challenged Adeleke to view his re-election as a renewed mandate and a solemn covenant with the people of Osun State.
The party urged the Governor to repay the electorate’s confidence with greater commitment to people-centred governance, quality infrastructure, job creation, improved education and healthcare, economic empowerment, security, social protection, transparency, accountability, and equitable development.
It particularly called on Adeleke to broaden the beneficiaries of government programmes and ensure that the dividends of democracy reached young people, women, workers, farmers, entrepreneurs and vulnerable communities across the state.
The NRM further urged the Governor to rise above partisan considerations and govern for all Osun residents, including those who voted for him and those who opposed his candidacy.
It said the true measure of democratic victory was not simply winning an election but using the mandate secured at the ballot box to build a more prosperous, peaceful, inclusive and united society.
The party also called on all political actors to respect the expressed will of the Osun electorate and strengthen Nigeria’s democratic institutions through peaceful engagement, tolerance, accountability and respect for the rule of law.
The NRM wished him wisdom, courage and a renewed sense of responsibility as he begins another phase of leadership in Osun State.
“The people have spoken. Democracy has prevailed. The mandate must now be translated into greater service, greater development and greater prosperity for the people of Osun State,” the party said.
