American R&B icon Mary J. Blige has opened up about her personal decision not to have children, stating that she prioritizes her independence and career legacy.
Speaking in a featured interview shared by The Root—following her guest appearance on the IMO podcast hosted by Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson—the music star reflected on her life choices and family dynamics.
Blige explained that her perspective on motherhood was shaped early in life by watching women in her environment navigate the heavy responsibilities and sacrifices required to raise children. She noted that observing those struggles made her value her personal freedom and the ability to travel without the constant demands of parenting.
“I love my freedom. I love being able to get up and go, and not have to worry about taking care of someone else full-time,” she shared.
The Grammy-winning singer added that she is completely satisfied with her role as an aunt, enjoying quality time with her nieces and nephews without the long-term obligations of parenthood.
Blige further emphasised that she views her music as her primary legacy, noting that her extensive discography reflects her love, healing, and lasting contribution to the world, rather than raising children.
