2027: Focus On Issues, NOA Tells Politicians As Campaigns Begin

As electioneering campaigns ahead of the crucial 2027 general elections kicked off, political parties and their candidates have been cautioned to play by the rules,v rather than seeing the car contests as a do or die affair.

The state director of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Akwa Ibom Directorate, Mr. Mkpoutom Mkpoutom, who handed down the advise in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, therefore appealed to political parties, candidates and their supporters in the State to keep their campaigns focused on issues and avoid attacking their opponents.

Mkpoutom said political campaigns should be about presenting ideas, policies and programmes that can improve the lives of the people, rather than exchanging insults or making personal attacks.

He noted that “political differences are normal in a democracy,” but stressed that such differences should not be allowed to create hatred, division or violence amongst the people.

According to him, candidates should tell the people what they intend to do if elected and allow voters to judge them based on their plans, character and ability to deliver.

He also appealed to political party supporters, particularly young people, to be careful about what they post and share on social media. He urged them not to spread false information, abusive messages or content capable of provoking others.

The NOA state director reminded party stakeholders, leaders, elders and supporters that Akwa Ibom has a reputation for peace, and urged all the actors to protect that reputation as the tempo of political activities rise.

“Let our campaigns be about what we can do for the people and not about destroying one another. We can disagree politically without becoming enemies.
Political parties and their supporters should respect one another, play by the rules and put the interest of Akwa Ibom State above personal and political ambitions. Peaceful and issue-based campaigns would help voters make better choices and strengthen democracy in the State,” he stressed
