CSO Decries Flooding Challenge In Communities

A civil society organisation, Environmental Defenders Network (EDEN) has decried  environmental challenge caused by flooding in  communities in Nigeria.

This is contained in its “State of the Nigerian Environment Report” presented by Dr. Vivian Njemanze, during the organisation’s hybrid session in Port Harcourt yesterday.

The report noted that recurrent floods had destroyed farmlands, displaced communities and disrupted economic activities.

It blamed unsustainable consumption and waste-disposal practices for worsening plastic pollution, particularly in the nation’s waterways.

EDEN also identified deforestation as a major concern, driven by agricultural practices, logging, poaching, firewood harvesting and development activities.

While demanding stronger regulation, the organisation called on the federal government to strengthen environmental regulatory agencies, particularly  the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) and the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA).

It demanded that oil-spill clean-ups should meet internationally accepted standards and that affected communities should receive appropriate compensation.
