Lawyers Launch Rapid Response Team To Protect Victims Of Rights Violations

A network of 35 lawyers has come together to provide rapid legal intervention for Nigerians who face intimidation, reprisals or rights violations as a result of speaking out against environmental and other forms of abuse.

The lawyers, drawn from different fields of legal practice and currently spread across four of Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, were inaugurated in Benin City as the Nigerian arm of the Defenders Legal Rapid Response Team.

The initiative is being promoted by the Environmental Defenders Network (EDEN), in collaboration with Chima Williams and Associates Law Firm, with support from Clidef.

Speaking at the inauguration, EDEN Executive Director, Comrade Chima Williams, said the network was created to rebuild public confidence in the legal profession and ensure that citizens whose rights are threatened can quickly access lawyers prepared to defend them.

Williams said the team was deliberately constituted rather than being an “all-comers platform,” with members united by a commitment to providing their expertise, time, intellectual resources and professional networks to protect citizens facing reprisals from government agencies, corporations or influential individuals.

He said the network comprises senior lawyers, academics, professors, government lawyers, activist practitioners and retired senior law-enforcement professionals who are also legal practitioners.

According to him, the varied backgrounds of the members would strengthen the team’s ability to respond effectively to cases involving environmental violations, land disputes, community rights and other fundamental rights issues.

Williams said the network’s intervention would be limited to lawful causes that are consistent with the Nigerian Constitution, national laws and applicable international legal instruments to which Nigeria is a party.

He expressed concern about declining public confidence in lawyers, particularly perceptions that some practitioners compromise cases when powerful interests are involved.

He said the new initiative would demonstrate that lawyers committed to professional integrity still exist and are willing to defend citizens irrespective of the influence or status of those involved in a dispute.

“The truth must be spoken at all times because it is only the truth that will set us free,” Williams said.

He disclosed that EDEN plans to extend the network to the remaining two geopolitical zones in the coming months, with the aim of establishing a truly national mechanism capable of providing urgent legal assistance to citizens whose rights are under threat.

Williams said legal interventions involving environmental abuses, fundamental rights violations and powerful institutions often require responsible media coverage to draw public attention to the issues and encourage relevant authorities to act.

He, therefore, urged journalists and media organisations to collaborate with the network, describing the media as an important partner in exposing issues of public interest and strengthening efforts to promote justice, accountability and the rule of law.
